SEDIA Open Day commemorates 10-year anniversary with showcase of development programmes and initiatives, and SME support

Kota Kinabalu (Monday) - The Sabah Economic Development and Investment Authority (SEDIA) will be celebrating its ten-year anniversary with an Open Day event, to be held at the Sabah Agro-Industrial Precinct (SAIP) 9am-5pm daily on November 26-28, 2019. The opening ceremony will be held in the late morning on November 26, 2019, and will be officiated by Chief Minister cum SEDIA Chairman Datuk Seri Panglima Mohd. Shafie Apdal.

SEDIA was established in 2009 as the One-Stop Authority to plan, coordinate, promote and accelerate the development of the Sabah Development Corridor (SDC). Having reached the 10-year mark in 2019, it is timely for SEDIA to further develop its direction as well as the SDC Blueprint v2.0, in line with the vision and agenda of the State and Federal Governments towards achieving Shared Prosperity Vision 2030. The upcoming open day event commemorates SEDIA's efforts spanning over the past decade towards achieving the SDC vision and mission, and will be co-organised with TERAJU, an agency under the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

The Open Day will highlight the outcomes from collaboration between SEDIA and TERAJU towards developing Sabah entrepreneurs, through initiatives such as Facilitation Fund, Bumiputera Entrepreneur Start-up Scheme (SUPERB) and Bumiputera Entrepreneur Development Fund.

Members of the public and related stakeholders are invited to participate in the many events to suit various interests, including:

  • An exhibition and bazaar promoting local SME products;
  • A forum on [email protected] initiatives;
  • Seminar sessions covering topics such as nation-building initiatives, developing Malaysia towards preparation of Industry 4.0, and SME financial support services;
  • SUPERB information clinics;
  • Workshops on robotics;
  • Seminar sessions by Malaysia Nuclear Agency;
  • HotDesk business development; and
  • Various art performances and public competitions.

Interest in the event has been overwhelming, whereby SEDIA has registered over 800 participants for just the HotDesk programme. Various government agencies will also be setting up information and help desks to inform the public on their programmes and initiatives.

The event will also allow all participants to learn about SDC development efforts moving forward, whereby priority will be given to the development of critical infrastructure to facilitate sea, air and road connectivity, and internet broadband, as well as a cluster of strategic sectors. In preparation for Industry 4.0, focus will also be emphasised towards human capital development, including entrepreneurship, a skilled and talented workforce to stimulate innovation such as research programmes, product development and commercialisation, and TVET programmes.

The 185-acre SAIP in Kimanis will serve as the venue for the SEDIA Open Day, and is envisaged as a centre of excellence in agro-biotechnology that optimises the state's biodiversity and abundant natural resources to produce higher value-added food and specialty products based on botanicals, aquatic plants and animals. Visitors during the event will also have opportunities to visit SAIP facilities and attend demonstrations of available services.

Targeted participants for the event include:

  • Policymakers and decision makers, as well as officers of authorities, district councils, departments and private sector agencies, and also members of NGOs;
  • Researchers, lecturers and educators from institutions of higher learning including TVET, and related agencies;
  • Local SMEs and start-ups, members of cooperatives, business owners, and the public;
  • Members of both the public and private sectors involved in SME development; and
  • Students from primary and secondary schools, TVET institutions, as well as public and private tertiary education institutions.
