SEDIA to hold open day commemorating decade anniversary and showcasing SDC projects


Kota Kinabalu (Friday) - The Sabah Economic Development and Investment Authority (SEDIA) today held the first implementation coordination meeting for the upcoming SEDIA Open day event, to be held at the Sabah Agro-Industrial Precinct (SAIP) 9am-5pm daily on November 26-28, 2019. The meeting this morning was attended by representatives from co-organiser TERAJU as well as from government ministries, departments, and agencies.

SEDIA was established in 2009, and vested with the necessary power to serve as a decision-making and execution institution that is tasked with realising the SDC vision and mission, by being the One-Stop Authority to plan, coordinate, promote and accelerate the development of the Sabah Development Corridor (SDC). Having reached the 10-year mark in 2019, the upcoming open day event commemorates SEDIA's efforts spanning over the past decade towards achieving the SDC vision and mission. The opening ceremony is on November 26, 2019, and will be officiated by Chief Minister cum SEDIA Chairman Datuk Seri Panglima Mohd. Shafie Apdal.

TERAJU, the co-organiser for the SEDIA Open Day and an agency under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, was established in 2011 as a strategic entity with a role to guide, drive and coordinate Bumiputera participation in the national economy. Its initiatives in Sabah are made possible in collaboration with SEDIA through the [email protected] satellite office launched in 2012. Various initiatives and programmes have been implemented through collaboration between SEDIA and TERAJU such as the Facilitation Fund and SUPERB programme, and has continued through the Bumiputera Entrepreneur Development Fund (DPUB) since 2016.

The objectives for organising the SEDIA Open Day are:

  • To bring exposure to the public and relevant stakeholders of the Federal and State Government's direction and current policies, in achieving Shared Prosperity Vision 2030;
  • To showcase and document the performance and results of the various SDC programmes and initiatives under the Federal and State Governments;
  • To provide a platform and opportunities for strategic partners - in particular TERAJU and other Federal and State government agencies, and the private sectors including SMEs - to promote their initiatives and form collaborative networks towards achieving Shared Prosperity Vision 2030;
  • To allow the public and relevant stakeholders to receive the latest information, as well as learn firsthand about SDC programmes and supporting initiatives, such as those available at SAIP, especially in preparation of IR4.0; and
  • To provide an avenue for the public, government agencies, and the private sectors to participate in SDC human capital development programmes, including entrepreneurship and skilled workforce that stimulates innovation, such as research programmes, product development and commercialisation, and TVET.
Targeted participants for the event include:
  • Policymakers and decision makers, as well as officers of authorities, district councils, departments and private sector agencies, and also members of NGOs;
  • Researchers, lecturers and educators from institutions of higher learning including TVET, and related agencies;
  • Local SMEs and start-ups, members of cooperatives, business owners, and the public;
  • Members of both the public and private sectors involved in SME development; and
  • Students from primary and secondary schools, TVET institutions, as well as public and private tertiary education institutions.

The 185-acre SAIP in Kimanis will serve as the venue for the SEDIA Open Day, and is envisaged as a centre of excellence in agro-biotechnology that optimises the state's biodiversity and abundant natural resources to produce higher value-added food and specialty products based on botanicals, aquatic plants and animals.
